All AHS Classes
Holiday Get Together
This One's Special too, Our 16th!

All AHS Alumni, significant others, elves, friends, whoever

The ALL CLASS Get-Together was originally started by late 1970's and early 1980's AHS Alumni, but All AHS class years are encouraged and welcome. We would love to see representatives from every class.

what: 16th annual AHS All Alumni HOLIDAY GET TOGETHER
who 1: All AHS Alum, significant others, friends, elves, whoever.
who 2: Represented mostly by people from mid 70s to early 80s classes, BUT EVERY year is invited to attend.
where: Olde Main Brewing Co. on Main Street in Ames
how: Cash (yours)
when: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. (if we can find an after-gathering), Friday, Dec 31, 2010

This is a first, we have never had the All Years Holiday get-together on New Years Eve. Here is why we are trying it this year: The gathering is usually the Friday between Christmas and New Year's. If the holidays hit that day (like it did last year in 2009 and again this year in 2010) we will pick a different date, so we are having it on Friday December 31, 2010, watch this page or the Alumni Calendar for adjustments to the schedule. Please help get the word out. Every year, we have hurt feelings because someone didn't get the word. The more emails and phone calls, the better.

The idea for an informal All Classes AHS reunion came out of years of discussions among Perry Beeman, Julie (Anderson) Larson, Bill Nutty (all AHS Class of '77) and others. The thought was to catch people while they were back in town for the holidays, and to have an informal, annual bar night/reunion for those of us who hate to wait five years for our own class gatherings to roll around. Finally, the trio of big talkers backed it up by actually planning an event.

This year's Ames High School Alumni Holiday Reunion night will be December 31, 2010 at Olde Main Brewing Co. in downtown Ames. We basically take over the place. It's so simple. We set the date. You show up, buy your own drinks, and, if you're a big spender, for your friends. Then drink up (in moderation of course), chat, and get caught up. This has been a meaningful, wonderful reconnection for many people, and we've had classmates from New York City, San Diego, Miami and elsewhere attend. The holiday gathering got off the ground 16 years ago, in a small way and mostly involving the AHS Class of '77, but has become much more. "We started out with about 30 people a year, but in the last couple of years, this has really taken off," Beeman said. "I rely heavily on the this alumni site for email addresses - and beg people to update theirs -- and that helps. What really got this going, though, is the simple act of friends letting their friends know about it through personal email address books and phone calls. The alumni newsletter and the website also carry notices.

In 2006, the reunion drew more than 100 people for the first time. In 2007, a record 110 showed up, from the AHS classes of 1967 to 2003. Some scholars think it might have even been more. The discrepancy comes from impaired judgement, vision, and math skills among some of the leaders.

See you at the next AHS Holiday Reunion!

Details: Just like last year! Lots of fun. About 100 AHS Alumni turned out for the 2006 AHS Holiday event, and a record 110 turned out in 2007. The foggy weather caused attendance to drop to 50 in 2008, there was a good turnout in 2009, but lets go for 200 in 2010!

disclaimer: This is the age of disclaimers, and of course we have one too. This Get-Together is not sponsored by the AHSAA, or anyone else affilated with AHS.

Summary

60th reunion summary from Bob Buck AHS 1950 Alum: The Ames High Class of 1950 met for their 60 year reunion May 17, 18, and 19, 2010. An open house was held at the home of Bob and Anne Buck from 2-9 PM, with a picnic supper served at 6 (and Veishia cherry pies for a surprise dessert.) A bus tour of the city, with lunch at Hickory Park, started the second day, and a hospitality room at Gateway Hotel was open 1:30 to 4:30. A class photograph preceded the dinner, which was followed by a great presentation by the Ames Historical Society. A breakfast buffet at the hotel served as our farewell gathering the next morning. Forty-six classmates and twenty-three spouses attended.

AHS CLASS OF 1955 CELEBRATES 55 YEAR REUNION

Report from Nancy Burkhart 1955 AHS Alumna

The class of 1955 met October 8-10, 55 years after graduation, for their eighth reunion in Ames with 43 classmates and 25 spouses/friends attending.

2010-09-29 two 1955 AHS Alumnae Leah Bowman left and Mary Kay Winkler Abbott right IMG 0963

Events kicked off Friday afternoon with a tour of the ISU Alumni House of special interest to all Iowa State alums in the class. Next came a tour of Sigler Inc. an industry grown large from its production of a wide variety of printed material plus many products with logos and slogans. Finally, an extended bus tour included familiar ground plus many of the expanded portions of the hometown. Out-of-towners were amazed at how much Ames has grown, especially north of the campus where we found a virtual new town within a town. Friday evening found the group at a barbeque supper facility, posing for a group photo, and engulfed in endless catch-up conversations.

Bill Ripp served as tour guide for the Ames High school building Saturday morning. Class members always enjoy the stop at the trophy case locations where, like current Ames High football and basketball teams, the 1955 teams are highlighted for their state championships. Also, the media center and the astro turf on the Little Cyclones football field were impressive.

Saturday night saw the group reconvening for dinner at the Ames Golf and Country Club. The program presented by Dennis Wendell '59, assisted by Alan Spohnheimer '67 (both of the Ames Historical Society), featured a slide show of people and places around Ames geared especially for the class's era of the Fifties.

All too quickly the final event arrived in north Ames with a delicious Sunday brunch. The class enjoys having an open mike at reunion events and this time virtually all attendees shared warm words about being back together. The 38 class members who have passed away were also recalled throughout the weekend.

This was actually the 13th gathering of the class. Starting in 1987, the year most of the class turned 50, birthday parties were added to the reunion schedule in five-year intervals. The first was in Ames followed by: 1992 -- Riverboat Cruise up the Mississippi; 1997 -- YMCA Camp of the Rockies, Colorado; and 2002 -- Tucson, Arizona (at the invitation of classmate Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup). In 2007 the class met in Seattle, billeted just blocks from the Space Needle, for nautical and land events.

There are many options for lodging in Ames during the reunion. This year we have reserved blocks of rooms at two locations, Microtel Inn and Suites and Holiday Inn Express. Both are easily accessible from I-35. Details about the room blocks and reservation information is listed under "Reunion Forums".
