18th All Classes AHS Alumni Holiday Get Together

AHS Holiday Get Together
Saturday December 22, 2012

All AHS Alumni, significant others, elves, friends, whoever

The ALL CLASS Get-Together was originally started by late 1970's and early 1980's AHS Alumni, but All AHS class years are encouraged and welcome. We would love to see representatives from every class.

The 2012 Ames High School Alumni Holiday Gathering / Reunion night was Saturday evening, December 22, 2012 at Olde Main Brewing Co. in downtown Ames. We basically took over the place. It's so simple. We set the date. You show up, buy your own food or drinks, and, if you're a big spender, for your friends. Then drink up (in moderation of course), chat, and get caught up. This has been a meaningful, wonderful reconnection for many people, and we've had classmates from New York, California, Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois and elsewhere attend. The holiday gathering got off the ground 18 years ago, in a small way and mostly involving the AHS Class of '77, but has become much more. "We started out with about 30 people a year, but in the last couple of years, this has really taken off," Beeman said. "I rely heavily on the this alumni site for email addresses - and beg people to update theirs -- and that helps. What really got this going, though, is the simple act of friends letting their friends know about it through personal email address books and phone calls. The alumni newsletter and the website also carry notices.

Why?

The idea for an informal All Classes AHS reunion came out of years of discussions among Perry Beeman, Julie (Anderson) Larson, Bill Nutty (all 3 from the AHS Class of '77) and others. The thought was to catch people while they were back in town for the holidays, and to have an informal, relaxing, annual fun gathering (i.e. reunion) for those of us who hate to wait five years for our own class gatherings to roll around. Finally, the trio of big talkers backed it up by actually planning an event.

See you at the next GREAT AHS Holiday Gathering!

The All Class AHS Holiday Gathering is normally held the Friday between Christmas and New Year's. If the holidays hit that day (like it did in 2009 and again in 2010) we will pick a different date, but this year we have decided to try something entirely different, so we have scheduled the gathering for Saturday December 22, 2012. Please help get the word out. Every year, we have hurt feelings because someone didn't didn't know about it. The more emails and phone calls, the better.

Stats:

Details: Just like last year! Lots and lots of fun and reminiscing and catching up and meeting new AHS Alum. Plus, you see your friends from other classes who you normally don't see at your own AHS class reunion because this is an ALL Class AHS gathering. About 100 AHS Alumni turned out for the 2006 AHS Holiday event, and a record 110 turned out in 2007 from the AHS classes of 1967 to 2003. Some scholars think it might have even been more. The foggy weather caused attendance to drop to 50 in 2008, there was a good turnout in 2009, 2010 wasn't the largest turnout we have ever had, but there was a respectible showing of about 60 AHS Alumni in 2010. Perry says a lot of younger classes are showing up now too and it is harder for him to know who the AHS grads are, so maybe it was more than 60 in 2010.

Disclaimer:

This is the age of disclaimers, and of course we have one too. This Get-Together is not sponsored by the AHSAA, or anyone else affilated with AHS. We just want to see all our great friends from AHS again.

AHS Class of 1942 Travel Group 70-Year Platinum Gathering

AHS 1942
May 28, 2012

The Ames High School Class of 1942 Travel Group 70-year Platinum gathering was held the 28th of May 2012

There is something special about the camaraderie of the Ames High School classes. And as the AHS Class of 1942 held its reunions, these friendships became even stronger. At one of these AHS reunions (possibly our 40th) Dave Lush, Bob Stafford, and Phyllis Rademacher began talking about a tour of France. Dave had the insider’s knowledge of France, a good travel agency, and a connection with a great bus company. Bob and Phyllis had the contacts. So the plans evolved, and immediately after the 50th anniversary reunion of the AHS Class of 1942 in Ames, a group of 28 alums, spouses, and friends headed to France. This trip was so successful that it was followed by trips again in 1994. 1996, 1998, 2001, 2003, and 2005. Altogether, over 60 different people participated, with 24 alone from the AHS Class of 1942. We toured not only France, but Switzerland, the Spanish Riviera, Germany, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, the Italian Lake Region, Belgium, and Holland. Only three of our travellers have made all seven trips: Dave and Phyllis and Jack Rademacher.

Sadly, Debe Lush died in a car accident. Dave has since married a lovely French woman, Maggie, who had not previously visited the U.S. Dave had shown her New York, California, Utah and the Grand Canyon, but not Ames or Iowa State University. It was his desire to show her this part of his life that inspired him to host a gathering of his fellow travelers on Monday, May 28, 2012.

AHS Class of 1957 55-Year Reunion

AHS 1957
October 18-20, 2012

The AHS class of '57 55th reunion was held October 18, 19, and 20, 2012

Web editors note: I discovered this very interesting set of photos from Ames High School registration day August 1956 on the Ames Historical Society website. Some of these classmates would have been in the 1957 AHS class registering for their senior year. Probably most of the 1957 AHS class can identify most of these classmates from these great photos. Also note: I was 3 weeks old when this photo was published.

One more photo of 11 seniors and national merit finalists from the AHS class of 1957, sitting on the first landing of steps in the main foyer of Ames High School when it was on Clark. Ed H.

A note from Nancy: Ames High School 1957 classmates gathered October 18-20, 2012 for their 55th class reunion in Ames, Iowa. Forty-four classmates attended. We all had a great time and look forward to the next 1957 AHS class reunion.

Many of the girls from the AHS class of '57 get together every other month for lunch and fun.

We are continuously updating all 1957 AHS classmates email addresses, which you will find here. We have heard back from 97 of our classmates so far with their current email addresses. Many thanks to all who have contacted me (Nancy) with your contact information. It had been a fun time connecting with many of my classmates. We encourage you to check the AHSAA website www.ameshigh.org from time to time to stay in touch with Ames High School alums. We updated the email addresses as of 2/8/2013 for the 97 (almost 100 !) classmates that contacted me, so the 1957 email list is current as of 2/8/2013. It would be helpful if classmates would check this website from time to time to make sure their email addresses are current. If you need to update your email address and you do not know your password, please contact the AHSAA by clicking the contact us button at the top or bottom of any page on the AHSAA website (this website) and they will be happy to assist you.

Nancy's update as of 2/8/2013: My husband, Dick and I are retired, live in Dike, Iowa, spend summers at Cass Lake, MN, winters in Sun City Center, FL. We have 4 children and 17 grandchildren. Life has been good and we are thankful for that. Nancy (Hagge) Woodley, AHS Class of 1957.

Letter from Scott Feamster 1962 AHS Alum September 19, 2012, after 1962 AHS 50 year reunion:

Dear Bill Ripp,

Thank you very much for your continuing efforts on behalf of Ames High School alumni as founder and secretary for the Ames High School Alumni Association. Thank you again for attending the Ames High School 1962 50th class reunion.

Carolyn and I particularly enjoyed socializing with our 60 AHS classmates and their spouses. The AHS Homecoming football game, Olde Main Brewing Company social gathering, and Hilton Inn social gathering were very well organized and a lot of fun. Carolyn and I also toured Ames locations especially meaningful in my youth: my 1220 Harding Avenue home, my Des Moines Register and Tribune paper route, historic Ames Main Street, Brookside Park, Collegiate Presbyterian Church, Roosevelt School, and old Ames High School.

Students of Ames Senior High, Proud of our school are we.
Cheering the orange and the black, On to the victory.
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Comrades in work and in play, Loyal and true are we.
Doing the best for our high school. Ames Hi Aims High.

In addition to our reunion, Carolyn and I celebrated my Iowa State University 45th commencement anniversary at ISU President Steve Leath's Installation, the ISU Varsity Marching Band Step Show, an ISU Cyclone Central Alumni Tailgate, and a tour of especially meaningful ISU locations: Campanile (50 bells), Memorial Union (Christian Petersen Four Seasons fountain), Library (Grant Wood murals), Beardshear Hall (central building), Gilman Hall (chemistry), Marston Hall (engineering), Sweeney Hall (chemical engineering), and Atanasoff Computer Center (first computer in the world). We sang "ISU Fights" and "Alma Mater" ("Bells of Iowa State").

During our very special Iowa weekend, we shared many wonderful walks down treasured memory lanes. When we moved out of Iowa, we took Iowa with us in our hearts. Carolyn so much enjoyed AHS Class of 1962 hospitality that she decided to party with us rather than cheer ISU to victory over Western Illinois. We look forward to the next AHS Reunion.

The Ames High School Class of 1962 is awesome! Thank you very much again for helping make our 50th reunion so meaningful.

Still aiming hi,

Scott Feamster 1962 AHS Alum
