All AHS Classes
Holiday Get Together
This One's Special, Our 15th!

All AHS Alumni, significant others, friends, elves, whoever

The ALL CLASS Get-Together is hosted and organized by late 1970's and early 1980's AHS Alumni, but All AHS class years are encouraged and welcome. We would love to see representatives from every class.

what: 15th annual AHS All Alumni HOLIDAY GET TOGETHER
who: All AHS Alum, significant others, friends, elves, whoever.
host: Hosted mostly by people from late 70s, early 80s classes, but every year is invited to attend.
where: Olde Main Brewing Co. on Main Street in Ames
how: Cash bar
when: 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. (if we can find an after gathering), Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009

The idea for an informal All Classes AHS reunion came out of years of discussions among Perry Beeman, Julie (Anderson) Larson, Bill Nutty (all AHS Class of '77) and others. The thought was to catch people while they were back in town for the holidays, and to have an informal, annual bar night/reunion for those of us who hate to wait five years for our own class gatherings to roll around. Finally, the trio of big talkers backed it up by actually planning an event.

This year's Ames High School Alumni Holiday Reunion night will be December 26, 2009 at Olde Main Brewing Co. in downtown Ames. We basically take over the place. It's so simple. We set the date. You show up, buy your own drinks, and, if you're a big spender, for your friends. Then drink up (in moderation of course), chat, and get caught up. This has been a meaningful, wonderful reconnection for many people, and we've had classmates from New York City, San Diego, Miami and elsewhere attend. The holiday gathering got off the ground 14 years ago, in a small way and mostly involving the AHS Class of '77, but has become much more. "We started out with about 30 people a year, but in the last couple of years, this has really taken off," Beeman said. "I rely heavily on the this alumni site for email addresses - and beg people to update theirs -- and that helps. What really got this going, though, is the simple act of friends letting their friends know about it through personal email address books and phone calls. The alumni newsletter and the website also carry notices.

In 2006, the reunion drew more than 100 people for the first time. In 2007, a record 110 showed up, from the AHS classes of 1967 to 2003. Some scholars think it might have even been more. The discrepancy comes from impaired judgement, vision, and math skills among some of the leaders.

The gathering is usually the Friday between Christmas and New Year's. If the holidays hit that day (like it does this year in 2009 so we are having it on Saturday this year), watch this page or the Alumni Calendar for adjustments to the schedule. Please help get the word out. Every year, we have hurt feelings because someone didn't get the word. The more emails and phone calls, the better.

See you at the next AHS Holiday Reunion!

Details: Just like last year! Lots of fun. About 100 AHS Alumni turned out for the 2006 AHS Holiday event, and a record 110 turned out in 2007. The foggy weather caused attendance to drop to 50 in 2008, but lets go for 200 in 2009!

Ames' blustery weekend of Oct. 9-11 saw 41 members of the Class of '54 (and numerous spouses) marking 55 years since graduation. Kick-off was a catered BBQ picnic at Inis Grove Park, where attendees from 13 states picked up their information packets and put their cameras to work. About 20 attended the Hall of Fame game, and a few even braved the cold for all four quarters.

Duane Green, driver par excellence, procured a bus for the 19 who went to Boone for a scenic ride through the Des Moines River valley on the steam-locomotive train Saturday morning. That evening, we gathered at the Gateway Hotel for a buffet banquet and an AV presentation prepared by Barb McLaughlin Marr chronicling our Ames school years from elementary through graduation. Conversation, much laughter, and many more pictures filled the remaining hours.

A Sunday buffet breakfast wound down the weekend. Jan Blair Wilson and Mary Hosmer Shahan arranged for all the delicious meals and the autumn decorations. Keith Covey, class president, served as general chair, Frank Judisch was treasurer, and Jeanne Cooke Collins took care of all communications.

We're considering a gathering in the spring of 2012, perhaps in the southeastern U'S., because our ranks grow thinner and our memory book grows thicker. The reunion could be part of a great vacation, or even be the vacation, because we'd pick an interesting location with choices of things to see and do. Willing to help? Have ideas? Notify Keith Covey at kcovey(at)rconnect(dot)com or Jeanne Collins at bluepencil21(at)q(dot)com .
